Coaching and Mentoring: Which do you Need?

According to several sources consulted, mentoring is on the rise.

Did you know that the word “mentor” came from the ancient Greeks? Odysseus appointed a guardian, called Mentor, to look after his son while he was away.

Mentor became an ally, a trusted friend, and a guide for the young man.

In the literature available on the differences between coaching and mentoring, one thing stands out as consistent throughout: a coach is a shorter-term relationship, and the coach is not as active verbally and does not usually instruct as the mentor.

However, with coaching, the client may uncover the solution to the challenge presented on his own, whereas the mentor is usually older, offers more guidance, and hangs out for the long run. Solutions are sought with more guidance from the mentor’s experience.

Both relationships offer an unparalleled opportunity to meet whatever challenge presents with wisdom and clarity, and hopefully, a little bit of laughter.

“I was in the 'doldrums' both with career and where I was in my life. Craig was instrumental in getting me through the ‘doldrums’ phase. He was critical in sparking my passion and building my confidence to puruse and accept a fantastic new job.”
